International Symposium on Gravity, Geoid and Height Systems 2016 (GGHS2016)

The 1st Joint Symposium of Commission 2 “Gravity Field” and International Gravity Field Service of the International Geodesy Association “Gravity, Geoid and Height Systems (GGHS2016)”, took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 19 to 23 September 2016. Its main focus was on discussions about methods of observation, evaluation and interpretation of the Earth gravity field and their implementation.
The Symposium program included the following sessions:
- Current and future satellite gravity missions,
- Global Gravity Field Modelling,
- Local/regional geoid determination methods and models,
- Absolute and Relative gravity: techniques and measurement methods,
- Height systems and unification of elevation data;
- Satellite altimetry and climate-relevant processes.
Our Institute was represented by Leonid F. Vitushkin, Head of the Laboratory for Gravimetry and Advanced Projects, and Chairman of the Subcommittee “Gravimetry and Gravimetric Networks” (2.1). He chaired two sessions at this Symposium: “Absolute and Relative Gravimetry” and “Ground and Aerogravimetry”.
A number of presented reports dealt with inertial measuring systems, absolute gravity and gravity gradiometers based on cold atoms.
During the Symposium a meeting of the Subcommittee was held, where the importance of developing the gravity gradiometry and establishing the appropriate metrological assurance system in the field of gradiometry measurements was emphasized. A number of approaches to the urgent task of creating a primary standard in the field of gravity gradiometry were proposed and discussed at length.
